"Meat"balls

Today I made spaghetti. I served the kids first and they chowed down immediately. I set a plate in front of my awesome husband. He leaned over and whispered, "What are these? Surely not...meatballs?"

"Let's say that they are," I whispered back.

The kids ate them, no problem. The eldest said they tasted a little funny, but she ate them anyway.

They were soy. What an amazing food--you can make that stuff look and taste like anything!

  1. I dig that your husband fully supports the neatballs concept (that's what we call them at our house, "neatballs").

Other news I thought you might like. Let's see how long it takes to get these sandwiches to TX and NE!

  2. I can pretty much guarantee that will never happen in York, Nebraska. I'm probably the only person who ever orders Veggie Delites.

  3. I still don't trust soy. Look into it some. I haven't found any sources I necessarily trust...but even if the dangers of soy are fake, the fact is - the soy you are eating is GMO. If nothing else, that makes me want to stay away.

  4. Luke, what dangers are you referring to?

The only dangers I've heard of with soy are increased risk of breast cancer and increased emotional volatility. Are there others?

Sommer, what have you read on the subject?

Mark is leary of giving the kids much soy.

As for GMO--pretty much everything you can buy at the grocery store is genetically modified, right?

  5. Here's a page full of claims on the dangers of soy...dunno much about the site or how valid their claims are, but that was from a quick google search about it. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/09/18/soy-can-damage-your-health.aspx

Monsanto and others have fought tooth and nail to not have GMOs labeled as such. But, pretty much any kind of processed food is made with GMO corn or soy or both. Even many of the non-processed foods are GMO. Here's a site dedicated to GMOs and this page talks about high-risk and no-risk foods. http://www.nongmoproject.org/learn-more/what-is-gmo/

  6. It's so freakin hard to eat good, healthy food. I fail daily, and it's really annoying. 99% of the food at grocery store is terrible for you. 99% of the foods marked all natural and/or organic, are still terrible for you.

The best thing you can do is look for local farmers markets, talk to the people selling the food about how they grow it and if its GMO or if they try to be organic.

Or better yet, find non-GMO seeds and plant them in your own garden and grow your own "real" food. So much easier said than done, I know. Who has time.
